The Technical Team

Our technical team is going through a period of organic growth, and currently we are looking to expand our team with through our penetration tester graduate scheme to develop more CTM and CTL level testers. The Altran acquisition has really started to change the way and the type of work that our penetration testers do. We are steadily moving away from standard CHECK work to explore new and more interesting areas within engineering – automotive, aeronautics and IoT, just to name a few.

We are in a unique position to be able to offer our consultants a wider variety of work than the vast majority of consultancies in the UK. This has allowed us to build a skills matrix and start to tailor progression and training to match your career ambitions. What work have we carried out recently? Physical testing on a major automotive manufacturer, testing on a cruise ship, testing apps on two major games consoles and three red team engagements within a national critical infrastructure organisation.

Each member of the team brings their own unique experiences and views so we positively encourage collaboration when needed. On larger engagements, we may assign multiple consultants. Every couple of months, the technical team get together for “Tech Night” – ordering in food, setting challenges for each other and sharing recent challenges they have faced. Recently, the team got together and discussed a recent red team event. They explored some of the methods used including the roadblocks and how they got around them; helping them to build our own red team playbook.

Since the Altran acquisition, we have kept all the things that made IRM a great company – brand identity and a SME culture that runs through the business. We don’t adopt a corporate culture and we are proud to have the same company ethos as we did twenty years ago. As part of the technical team, you are not one of a thousand consultants. Each member of team has the opportunity to shine and experience some truly weird, wonderful and unique projects.

The Role

Our graduate consultants are put though an 8 week training course that is designed to take them through their CTM exams. This course is a mixture of classroom based learning and driven self-study. After completing the course you will then be added to our roster of testers, you will begin by shadowing with more senior consultants before being signed off as an official member is the IRM Technical consultancy.

Key Skills and Criteria

  • Basic skills in penetration testing
  • Basic knowledge of multiple OS including Windows & *NIX
  • Basic knowledge configure network devices, firewalls, IDS/IPS devices and wireless technologies
  • Ability to write and produce quality reports with IRM’s in-house developed report writing tool
  • Work individually or part of a team
  • Can work to tight client deadlines
  • Ability to communicate complex situations clearly and concisely at all levels


  • Degree level or relevant experience/qualifications
  • SC clearance or the ability to obtain this
  • Anything else is a bonus
